Our Story
Maryland’s Black Barn Alpacas Ranch is owned by the animal-loving couple Travis and Yussy McManus. Travis was raised on a cattle ranch, and Yussy grew up riding horses—cementing their love of farm life from a young age. The couple lives on the ranch and looks forward to greeting the alpaca herd every morning with nose boops (and an extra handful or two of food).
Travis manages the farm team, and Yussy leads the Y Interiors design team, dreaming up home goods made with genuine alpaca fleece. Together, they intend to expand Black Barn Alpacas, delivering well-bred animals, quality fleece products, and unforgettable experiences. Take it from the experts; there is nothing more rewarding than being able to snuggle up to an alpaca every day!
Alpaca Breeding Program
At Black Barn Alpacas, we are creating a premier alpaca breeding program focused on producing show-quality or “typey” black and gray alpacas through sustainable and caring farming practices. By way of strategic, sustainable, and compassionate breeding, we aim to produce fine-quality fleece, champion alpacas, and a happy herd.

We are a real working alpaca ranch, producing some of the finest quality fleece around. After we shear our fuzzy alpaca friends, we turn fleece harvests into one-of-a-kind apparel, home goods, and accessories. 🍪 This past weekend, we welcomed 4th and 5th grade Girl Scouts to the farm as they worked toward their Animal Habitats Badge!
The girls learned all about alpacas’ natural habitat, how we recreate that here in Maryland, and how different the climate was when we were operating in Texas (and what adaptations needed to be made). It was a fun and educational day full of curious questions and plenty of alpaca time!

Al-fact-a: it’s Cream Puff’s birthday! 🎉
A little storytime about Cream Puff [spoiler alert: she almost didn’t come to MD with us from TX]…
Cream Puff first came to our TX farm as a cria by side of her mama Candy. They were placed with us as their owner could no longer care for her herd and needed help rehoming her and her friends.
As we cared for Cream Puff, we quickly fell in love with her sweet, calm, and independent spirit. She welcomed us with curiosity and kisses.
We found the perfect new owner for Cream Puff, whom she lived with for months before our move to MD. Time did not heal our hearts and we missed the little energy we grew to love.
Before we embarked on our cross country move, we requested to say a final goodbye to Cream Puff at her new home. Her kind new owner, knowing of our special bond, offered that we take Cream Puff with us as she believed she missed her home and was meant to be with us.
We were elated to bring her with us and provide a forever home for our sweet little girl. Sometimes, souls are meant to be together and that’s what we think about our special Cream Puff 🦙🫶🏼

🌸🌕 Full Flower Moon Yoga Hike 🌕🌸
Have you ever heard of a Yoga Hike?
We hadn’t until @cheryoga108 visited, and we instantly knew we had to offer this experience! As a bonus, we are going to do it under the upcoming Full Flower Moon!
On Saturday, May 10th, at 8 PM, we’ll take a ½ mile guided hike through the farm’s wooded trails, pausing along the way for simple standing yoga postures led by Cher Yoga. No mats needed—just comfortable shoes, a flashlight or headlamp 🔦, and a chance to move and breathe in nature 🌿.
We’ll finish by watching the alpacas 🦙 under the moonlight—a quiet, grounding way to end the evening.
