Our Story
Maryland’s Black Barn Alpacas Ranch is owned by the animal-loving couple Travis and Yussy McManus. Travis was raised on a cattle ranch, and Yussy grew up riding horses—cementing their love of farm life from a young age. The couple lives on the ranch and looks forward to greeting the alpaca herd every morning with nose boops (and an extra handful or two of food).
Travis manages the farm team, and Yussy leads the Y Interiors design team, dreaming up home goods made with genuine alpaca fleece. Together, they intend to expand Black Barn Alpacas, delivering well-bred animals, quality fleece products, and unforgettable experiences. Take it from the experts; there is nothing more rewarding than being able to snuggle up to an alpaca every day!
Alpaca Breeding Program
At Black Barn Alpacas, we are creating a premier alpaca breeding program focused on producing show-quality or “typey” black and gray alpacas through sustainable and caring farming practices. By way of strategic, sustainable, and compassionate breeding, we aim to produce fine-quality fleece, champion alpacas, and a happy herd.

After we shear our fuzzy alpaca friends, we turn fleece harvests into one-of-a-kind apparel, home goods, and accessories. Volume up for baby spits 💨🦙
Yes… alpacas do spit, and this little moment proves it. Sophia’s baby boy was feeling playful, but Esme was clearly saying “no thanks!”
While baby spits are more like shooting blanks, alpacas often spit and neck-tussle to set boundaries with their herd mates. While we joke that one could just walk away, alpacas usually prefer to posture and stand their ground to make their point. Herd dynamics at work!

Shamrock & Snuggles Storytime 🍀🦙
Join us for a cozy, giggle-filled St. Patrick’s Day celebration! Little listeners will enjoy festive stories all about shamrocks, luck, and our fluffy farm friends. After storytime, kids will create a fun hands-on fleece craft, take part in musical brain breaks to get the wiggles out, and finish the fun by feeding our friendly alpacas. Meet Mazuki. She was a bottle baby, so from the very beginning she formed a special bond with her human mama. Now, whenever she hears her mama’s voice, she comes running over to say hi.
Alpacas are incredibly observant and can strongly bond with the people who care for them, especially when they’re hand-raised. Mazuki doesn’t just recognize a voice — she recognizes her person. 🫶🏼
